Whitletts Vics : Match Report

Monday, 18 February 2019

A last gasp goal from Sean Ewart gave Vics all three points in a thriller at James McGrory Park.

This was a match that had it all. Goals, Penalty Kick and Red Cards and two teams who went all out to win the game.

Vics started strongly, pressing the home side back into defence from the off and with only four minutes on the clock they took the lead. Thomas Donovan picked the ball out on the right and slid the ball into Adam Forsyth who shrugged ff the challenge of a defender before firing the ball past Roch’s keeper Jamie McGuire.

Ryan McManus tried to respond for the home side by was denied by Martin Fraser but with seven minutes on the clock it was Vics who should have doubled their advantage when Forsyth set up Jordan Baird but the striker fired wide of the target.

McManus and Kieran Martin had shots on goal saved by Fraser who made an outstanding save at full stretch to deny McManus but Vics were always looking the likelier to add to their tally and in the 24th minute they did just that. Jordan Boyd won the ball in midfield and Baird outpaced the St.Roch’s defender and kept his cool as he rounded McGuire to roll the ball into the empty net.

A team is often at their most vulnerable after they have scored and that proved to be the case for Whitletts as within seconds the home side had reduced the leeway. A break down the right saw Eddie Ferns fire a low ball across the face of goal and Rab Maguire slid in at the back post to score.

That goal gave St. Roch’s confidence and they took the game to Vics and in the 34th minute they were back on level terms. A Ewart slip in midfield allowed Jordan Logan to race clear and he lifted the ball over the diving figure of Fraser into the net despite the best efforts of Ewart to clear.

Martin then headed a McManus cross wide as The Candy looked to turn the game on its’ head before half time but the sides went in all square at the break.

The second half started with St.Roch’s in the ascendancy and some neat close footwork by McManus set up Martin who fired just past the angle.

Donovan broke down the right and set up Baird who took the ball past a defender but the ball got stuck under his feet and his tame shot was saved by Maguire.

The Candy almost took the lead in the 55th minute when a stunning free kick by Ferns crashed back off the crossbar with Fraser beaten but in the 62nd minute the home side were reduced to ten men when Paul Tierney brought down Forsyth just outside the box as the Vics striker raced in on goal. No doubt at all about the decision and in similar circumstances six minutes later, St. Roch’s were reduced to nine men when substitute Kieran Daw was given a straight red for bringing down Forsyth again in a last man challenge inside the box. Forsyth dusted himself down to take the spot kick but McGuire made a fine save diving to his right to deny Vics top scorer.

It was Whitletts who were in the ascendancy as the nine men of St.Roch’s defended in depth. Although Ferns whipped in another free kick that wasn’t far away the home side were holding on to what they had with most of the play inside their half.

But just as the game looked like ending in stalemate, young Robbie Hannah broke into the box and his low cross picked out Ewart who drilled the ball into the back of the net for the winner.

The action wasn’t finished there as St.Roch’s full back Thomas Hanlon was then sent off after receiving a second yellow for some verbals to the match official.

A thrilling match that had it all and as Peter Leonard stretch his unbeaten run as Vics boss to three matches.
