Whitletts Vics : Match Report

Friday, 12 April 2019

Two late goals secured the points for Rossvale under the floodlights of Dam Park to move the Bishopbriggs club up into third place in the Championship and give their dream of promotion to the Premiership a major boost.

Vale started the match well, taking the game to Vics and could have taken the lead in the sixth minute after on loan Hurlford United striker Marc McKenzie driven ball across goal found Matt Niven whose volley into the ground bounced over the crossbar.

Vics worked their way back into the game an it took a Niven clearance off the goal line to deny the home side from a Sean Ewart inswinging corner that beat the keeper. Adam Forsyth then missed a great opportunity to put Whitletts ahead when he completely miskicked a low Ewart cross into the box with the goal at his mercy.

The Dam Park side were having the better of the play and it was somewhat against the run of play that Rossvale took the lead in the 36th minute. A ball out left picked out Peter Bradley and his driven cross across goal was met on the volley by Chris Duff whose shot flew in off the post giving Vics stand in keeper Martyn Barclay no chance.

That goal gave Rossvale a clear boost and Bradley volleyed over the bar after Raymond Buchanan clearance from a corner just before the break.

The second period saw the visitors have most of the play but goalmouth incidents were few and far between. Paul Millar went close for Vics with a 30 yard drive but for all their territorial advantage it wasn’t until the last ten minutes that Rossvale made their superiority count.

In the 81st minute Barclay turned back the years to produce an outstanding save to keep out a curling effort from Liam Crichton that was heading into the top corner but two minutes later their was nothing the big keeper could do to prevent Vale sealing the points with a second goal. From a corner kick, Gary McMenamins header was blocked on the line by Barclay but Niven was on hand to net the rebound from close range.

In the 85th minute it was 3-0. A defensive mix up at the back between Barclay and Millar allowing McKenzie to pounce on the loose ball to fire into the empty net.
