Whitletts Vics : Match Report

Friday, 09 August 2019

Vics recorded their first league points of the season with a comfortable win over Craigmark at Dam Park in a game that both keepers will quickly want to forget.

But it was a controversial match which was turned on its’ head by two decisions in as many minutes, both of which went Whitletts’ way.

But it was a nightmare start for the Dam Park side and in particular keeper Martyn Barclay who allowed a long kick out from his opposite number Rhys Russell to bounce over his head into the net to give ‘Mark a second minute lead.

However within sixty seconds Whitletts were level. A long kick out this time by Barclay was well controlled by Robert Patterson who then slipped the ball past Russell for the equaliser.

David Cunningham had a great chance to give Vics a 7th minute lead when he was set up by Patterson but fired wide while Morgan Brown had a volley well held by Russell after Patterson failed to direct a Sean Ewart cross goalward.

But the controversy started in the 26th minute when the visitors thought they had regained the lead only for the Assistant Referee’s late flag to rule out Ryan McCubbin’s tap in after Scott Dempster had beaten Barclay to the ball to set him up. But that was nothing compared to their fury two minutes later when Vics took the lead.

After Russell failed to collect a Craig Reid throw in, Cunningham’s header looked to be cleared off the line by Robert Boyd only for the standside assistant, James Hosie to flag that the ball had crossed the line. ‘Mark’s Boyd receiving a yellow card for his furious protests to the official.

There was no doubt however two minutes later when the Ayr side went 3-1 ahead. Ewart’s crosses were causing the ‘Mark defence problems throughout the first half and on this occaision Russel failed to get near the ball leaving Reid a tap in at the back post.

Ewart was denied a goal himself by a Boyd clearance on the line as Whitletts took control of the game and with three minutes of the second period gone they further increased their lead. From a ball into the box Cunningham controlled the ball before poking the ball between the legs of Russell into the net.

The game looked over as a contest but Craigmark were thrown a lifeline in the 67th minute. As Barclay spilled a cross ball into the box, McCubbin took the ball past him but his shot struck the arm of a Vics’ defender leaving referee Steven MacDonald no option but to point to the spot. Aidan Conner stepped forward to beat Barclay from 12 yards and once again Craigmark had belief they could get something from the game.

The Dalmellington side pushed forward at every opportunity but it was Vics who had the best chance to score when Patterson’s Crossfield ball picked out Reid but the midfielder fired wide with just the keeper to beat.

Then with ten minutes remaining Craigmark’s hopes were dealt a further blow when midfielder Jordan Cherrie received a straight red card for an over the top challenge on Martin Findlay in which the Craigmark player came of worst with an injury to the top of his foot.

But with 3 minutes remaining any doubt about the outcome was ended when Calum Walsh headed a Ewart free kick back across goal leaving Patterson the simplest of chances to head home.

A good win for Vics over a Craigmark side that had been undefeated on their last three trips to Dam Park and a result that will set Whitletts up for Saturday’s trip to Petershill.
