Whitletts Vics - Match Report

WHITLETTS VICTORIA  8 - GIRVAN 0

Whitletts returned to winning ways with a comfortable victory at Dam Park in this South Ayrshire derby against a very young Girvan side.

In the opening minute Whitletts striker Tony Balfour was sent clear but his attempted lob was saved by Girvan keeper Callum Robertson.

However disaster struck for the visitors in the 5th minute when young defender Sean Scobie was put under pressure by Michael O’Connor and the Vics striker prodded the ball past Robertson before rolling the ball into the empty net.

Nine minutes later the home side doubled their advantage with a stunning strike from 20 yards that gave Robertson no chance.

The home side continued to dominate the proceedings and it came as no surprise when they increased their advantage in the 33rd minute. Wilson picked the ball up out on the right and he lofted the ball over the keeper into the corner of the net for a spectacular goal.

It was almost four moments later when a Ricky Hanvey drive from 25 yards was tipped over the bar by Robertson.

The second half was played in a similar fashion with the home side pressing forward. They almost grabbed a fourth early in the second period when Robertson’s attempted clearance struck Balfour but the keeper recovered to save but there was nothing he could do moments later when Hanvey’s 25 yards angled drive gave him no chance as it settled in the back of the net.

Balfour then had a  net bound shot blocked but he did get his name on the scoresheet in the 51st minute as he ran on to take the ball round Robertson before rolling the ball into the empty net.

Whitletts continued to create chances with Wilson, O’Connor and Martin Lawrie all going close.

Number six arrived in the 65th minute. Again Hanvey thumping the ball from 20 yards over the head of the keeper into the roof of the net. Jim Wilson fired wide from close range, Sean Ewart had a close range header saved while a Shaun Allan striker came back off the post as Vics’ looked to increase their lead.

A diving header from Hanvey flew just over, O’Connor headed straight at the keeper while Ewart just failed to connect with a Lawrie cross in front of goal.

The seventh goal arrived in the 80th minute. Ewart sent a defence splitting pass through for Allan whose first attempt was blocked but he followed up to roll the ball into the empty net.

The scoring wasn’t finished there and with three minutes remaining Ewart was sent clear down the left and the 17 year old rolled the ball across the goal past Robertson.

O’Connor had a great chance to make it nine in the final minute but fired straight at the keeper as Whitletts moved to the top of the Ayrshire District League.
