Hungarian Miners' Game 1963

In May 1963 a Hungarian Miners football team visited Scotland.

The Hungarians played 3 games

- the first against Thornton Hibs on the 1st May

- the second against a Junior Select team of Scottish miners at the Miners Gala on the 6th May

- the third against Arniston Rangers on the 8th May.

I have been able to name all the Hungarian players but only know Joe Nelson was captain of the Scottish team. Joe , at that time, was playing for Lochore Welfare and a miner at Comrie Colliery - the photograph might possibly be clear enough to stir memories and identify these two Scottish players.

I understand a Jim Kirkwood, an official at Newtongrange Star, organised the annual Gala football games . Unfortunately, he is no longer with us and the Club has no record of this unique game.
