Whitletts Vics : Match Report

Monday, 11 February 2019

LARKHALL THISTLE 0 - WHITLETTS VICTORIA 0

Larkhall Thistle picked up their first point of the season in this match but in all honesty Vics were lucky to escape Gasworks Park with a point after a lacklustre performance at Gasworks Park.

Conditions were difficult for both sides but for the majority of the match it was the home side who looked the more likely to score.

Early doors a Craig Forbes cross drifted narrowly past the angle while a Michael Brunton shot flashed inches past the Vics goal.

It took Vics until midway into the first half to threaten the home goal but Isaac Kerr was denied when his header was brilliantly saved by Jags keeper Ryan Cooper at full stretch as the ball looked to be heading into the top corner. Callum Ogston headed over at the back post while Adam Forsyth’s shot was deflected wide as the visitors enjoyed a spell of pressure.

Jordan Baird fired just wide of the angle as Larkhall failed to deal with a corner kick while Cooper again came to his sides rescue to deny Thomas Donovan at point blank range after the striker intercepted a pass back. A Forsyth near post flick on an Andy Kerr cross fell into the keepers arms.

But that first half spell was as good as it got for Vics who despite creating the better chances in that first period were finding it difficult to cope with the Jags forward play where a bit more composure in the final third may have paid dividends.

The home side started the second half strongly with a Brunton back post header coming back off the post and a shot from distance by Adam Boyle and a Bartosz Mackiewicz header both going just over the bar.

Cooper prevented Vics from making the breakthrough when he clawed an Issac Kerr header wide and from the resulting corner Paul Millar headed wide but for most of the game it was Larkhall who carried the goal threat.

Mackiewicz turns two Vics defenders before firing just wide while Vics defender David Mathieson didn’t know much about Greg Fernie’s netbound shot which struck him on the line.

Larkhall continued to press for the goal that would have given them all three points but Fernie fired wide. With four minutes remaining Fraser made an outstanding save, changing direction to save a Dylan Simpson free kick while at the other end, Vics came close to stealing all three points but Ogston’s header was held by Cooper.

A game from which Larkhall will take a lot of confidence from and one which as far as Peter Leonard is concerned, a performance from which he will learn a lot about his players and how they respond to a poor all round display.
