Whitletts Vics : Match Report

Friday, 03 May 2019

Craigmark looked to have booked their place in next seasons Championship after this crucial win over a lacklustre Vics at Station Park.

The home side, fighting for survival, wanted the points more than Vics whose season appears to be petering out. Whitletts may be safe in mid table but manager Peter Leonard is still assessing the players as he looks to build his for next seasons’ campaign and he clearly wont be happy with what he has seen in recent weeks as the Ayr side suffered their third straight defeat.

Yet the outcome of this game could have been so different. Both sides looked up for it early on but with Craigmark playing the long balls forward for Greg Vernon to chase, the visitors defence looked suspect in handling the lone striker and in the 17th minute they took the lead when Vernon found himself in acres of space to roll the ball past Marty Fraser.

Louis Kerr was denied by for Whitletts keeper Elliot Masterton who made a fine blocking save and then Adam Forsyth got on the end of a Graeme Barbour flick but lost his balance and shot wildly wide. It was Whitletts who were creating the better opportunities and Jordan Boyd fired just over from the edge of the box. Masterton kept the home side in front with a superb save down to his right to deny Thomas Donovan but Craigmark still looked dangerous on the counter attack playing the long ball game and Fraser had to be alert to save a Vernon header.

But two minutes from the interval it was the home side who doubled their lead with the simplest of goals. A free kick into the box was headed back across goal by Jordan Cherrie and Vernon had the easiest of opportunities from only a few yards out to head into the empty net.

It got worse for Whitletts just a minute after the restart when Vernon completed his hat trick as his deft touch deflected a Marc Dyer shot away from Fraser to make it 3-0 but that seemed to reawaken Vics and two minutes later they reduced the leeway when Louis Kerr’s 20 yard free kick over the wall nestled in the back of the net.

Whitletts were having the better of the play but there were still scares at the other end, particularly when Fraser uncharacteristically almost let an Adam Lowe shot squirm through his legs!

On the break Ryan McCubbin was denied by Fraser who tipped his drive over the bar but most of the play was in the Craigmark half and in the 71st minute Vics reduced the leeway to just one goal. A well worked goal as Forsyth broke down the left and his first time ball into the box was met by the onrushing Jordan Baird to fire past Masterton.

It was game on now but to their credit Craigmark didn’t panic and appeared to reinvigorate their desire to win the match and with just eight minutes left they did just that. Again the Vics defence were exposed as Cherrie raced into the box from the right and with Fraser expecting the cross, beat the Vics keeper at his near post.

Fraser denied Aidan Connor late on as he turn his shot round the post as ‘Mark claimed all three points to take a huge stride towards survival.

Now Vics must regroup and refocus for their final league match of the season at promotion chasing Cumbernauld where Peter Leonard will be demanding much more from his players that they displayed tonight.
