Whitletts Vics : Match Report

Monday, 06 May 2019

CUMBERNAULD UNITED 6 - WHITLETTS VICTORIA 0

Vics final match of the season turned into a nightmare at Guy’s Meadow as they were hit for six by promotion chasing Cumbernauld.

For a number of weeks now, with their place in the Championship next season having been secured, the Whitletts players have had only pride to play for but with this performance that pride had clearly evaporated as the home side met with little resistance. Striker Adam Forsyth was looking to make a little bit of history, needing one goal to chalk up 40 for the season but Vics failed to register a single shot on target throughout the entire 90 minutes to trouble the trialist keeper and to leave manager Peter Leonard a much clearer view as to what is required to be done over the summer to bolster the squad for next season.

From the kick off Cumbernauld were on the ascendancy with Marty Fraser called into action early on to save a header from Connor Scullion.

Cumbernauld needed the points to close in on the third promotion place and in the 28th minute they made the breakthough. In a similar fashion to a goal conceded in their last outing at Craigmark, a cross into the box was headed back across goal to leave Ross McCabe the simple task to head home.

Two minutes later it was 2-0 when Connor Stevenson curled the ball past Fraser from 20 yards. His namesake Tony had a great chance to make it three but could only side foot straight at Fraser after a neat 1-2 carved open the Vics defence. Kieran McAleenan then scooped a shot just wide in front of goal after Callum Ogston had been caught in possession and just before half time Scullion should have done better but could only shoot straight at Fraser.

The second half should have seen an improvement but in honesty this was a Vics performance of eleven individuals and not a team. At times it was as if the players had never met each other and Cumbernauld took full advantage.

Paul Callander fired over when he should have scored before the home side finally made their superiority count in the 57th minute from the penalty spot. Tony Stevenson scoring after Ogston had brought down 3.

In the 69th minute it was 4-0. From 20 yards out, McAleenan wasn’t closed down allowing him the opportunity to curl the ball high past Fraser.

Substitute John Cunningham headed went wide from close range but not to be denied, with 12 minutes remaining he made it 5-0. Paul Millar totally missed a low cross into the box leaving Cunningham unmarked to sweep the ball home from eight yards. And the Vics horror show was completed in the 85th minute as Fraser initially parried a 14 shot but Cunningham followed up to score from close range to complete the rout.

So Vics season peters out to a close but this result should not detract from the superb season that Whitletts have had in their return to the second tier of junior football. Many people’s favourites to go down at the start of the season, Vics have more than held their own over the course of the season and targets have been achieved. Now manager Peter Leonard begins the job over the close season develop the squad further to continue the Clubs’ progress next season.
