Whitletts Vics : Match Report

Monday, 05 August 2019

Whitletts went down to the only goal of the game ion their opening league fixture to the ten men of Neilston at Brig O’Lea.

But this was a match the Dam Park side will feel they should have taken something from but with three of their four strikers out with injuries, some poor finishing and a bit of misfortune let them down badly in front of goal.

In the opening seconds Vics tested home keeper Kyle Pirrie with a Stewart Davidson drive from just outside the box which the keeper parried away while at the other end Dan McColgan did well to get down to hold a Ross MacKinnon drive at his near post.

The first half was a fairly even affair with neither side threatening the opposing goal too much despite some good build up play. The only other incidents of note being a Paul Stewart effort for Neilston that was deflected over the bar while on the stroke of half time Davidson tried his luck at goal again but found the side netting .

The second half was a different affair altogether with Vics doing most of the pressing and they should have taken the lead in the 51st minute when David Cunningham’s shot was blocked and Louis Kerr’s follow up saved by the feet of Pirrie.

But the game was turned on its’ head on the hour mark when Neilston were reduced to ten men. Ross Hucknall had been booked moments earlier but after he had been fouled he launched into a late challenge on Davidson for which both players were cautioned and Hucknall was sent for an early bath. However from the resulting free kick Neilston took the lead. MacKinnon stepping forward to fire a free kick from 25 yards over the head of McColgan.

For a few minutes Vics lost their way while Neilston lost their discipline a wee bit took as referee Scott Love brandished a further three yellow cards in a two minute spell.

But with manager Peter Leonard absent through illness, Assistant Manager Gerry Phillips changed the shape, bringing on Robert Patterson despite carrying an injury, as Vics went in search of the equaliser.

And in the 73rd minute Vics should have been awarded a penalty and Neilston reduced to nine men but the referee amazingly only awarded a corner kick! Keeper Pirrie was unaware of the presence of Patterson as he dropped the ball to kick it upfield and was robbed of possession by the Vics striker who stepped just inside the penalty area and with an open goal he was brought down by Paul Doyle. It looked a penalty all day long but Vics only received a corner despite their protests.

Vics continued to press forward. Patterson had a shot deflected over and Pirrie spilled a Louis Kerr shot but found no takers. And in the last couple of minutes Patterson again had an opportunity when he turned a defender inside the box but his angled drive slipped narrowly past.

Not the outcome Vics were hoping for in their first league match of the season but they will regroup and prepare for the visit of Craigmark on league duty on Wednesday evening with an 8pm kick off.
