Whitletts Vics : Match Report

Monday, 19 August 2019

Ayr United fans who took advantage of Whitletts half price offer for this game were treated to a cracking 90 minutes in which both sides playing open and attacking football in an entertaining match at Dam Park.

And it took a late David Cunningham goal to separate the sides as Vics’ took the points to end league leaders Cumbernauld’s 100% start to the season.

The tempo for this match was set in the first minute when Cunningham set up Robert Patterson but former Falkirk keeper Darren Hill blocked the strikers effort. Hill denied Patterson again moments later when the Vics frontman tried to capitalise on a short pass back.

Whitletts were having the better of the early play and when Patterson set up Thomas Donovan, the strikers angled shot from the edge of the box flew inches wide. Cumbernauld’s first real chance came in the 13th minute as the Vics defence struggled to clear a free kick into the box but Connor Stevenson’s drive was well held by Dan McColgan. But it was his opposite number Hill who was a real thorn in Whitletts side and the United keeper made an outstanding save at full stretch to turn a Craig Reid header round the post.

McColgan again did well to save a Scott Thomson shot after the midfielder had turned Isaac Kerr inside the box while for Vics Donovan and Patterson combined again and again Donovan’s angled drive flew narrowly wide.

Whitletts had Callum Walsh to thank for keeping them level in the 40th minute with a miraculous clearance from a Thomson cross while facing his own goal with ‘Nauld striker Chris Hall waiting to pounce and the importance of that clearance was evident just two minutes later when Whitletts took the lead. Paul Millar found Patterson racing clear on goal and as Hill raced from his line Patterson calmly slipped the ball through the keepers legs into the net.

It was a deserved lead at the interval for Vics but the second half started in a frantic fashion with both sides going all out and the game being really stretched and open. Probably too open for the coaching staff of both sides!

McColgan reacted superbly to block a Paul Callander shot after a neat wee dink over the Vics defence and then from a David MacKay effort at the back post Hall saw his netbound shot blocked as the visitors searched for the equaliser. For the Vics Donovan nipped in front of Ross McCabe to get on the end of a Sean Ewart cross but Cumbernauld skipper reacted well to get a foot in to clear the danger just as Donovan seemed set to score. Donovan was then denied by Hill after being set up by a cute Patterson back heel from a Reid free kick.

There was always going to be more goals in this game and in the 53rd minute the visitors struck the equaliser. Scott Thomson racing clear onto a ball over the top of the Vics defence to fire past McColgan.

Callander then drove wildly wide from inside the area while Donovan again found himself clean through on goal but again the superb Hill raced from his line to narrowly the angle and make a superb block to deny the little striker. Patterson then had an effort parried by Hill and as the game entered the final quarter of an hour Hall should have put the visitors ahead with a front post header from a corner kick that flashed wide.

And two minutes later the price was paid for that miss as Vics took the lead. Not before Hill again made an outstanding save at full stretch to turn behind a Patterson shot at the back post but from the resulting corner kick, Cunningham rose above everyone to head Whitletts back in front.

Cumbernauld fought to get back on level terms with coach Ian Wilson being red carded for an uncomplimentary comment to referee Ross Birrell as Vics saw out the game to claim a deserved three points.
