Whitletts Vics : Match Report

Friday, 23 August 2019

Title favourites Darvel overpowered Vics at Recreation Park in a match which was a horror show for the visiting fans. Whitletts should have went into this game in a confident mood after ending Cumbernauld’s 100% record at the weekend but they showed Darvel far too much respect and in the end they were simply over run by the home side.

Darvel had lots of possession but wasted a lot of good positions early on through poor decision making. Indeed it was Darvel keeper Chris Truesdale who was the busier early on making two good early saves to deny Robert Patterson and then saving a David Cunningham header from the edge of the box. Darvel’s first attempt came from an Allan MacKenzie shot that slipped just wide after an interception by Isaac Kerr broke kindly for the Vale striker.

Truesdale then saved an Isaac Kerr header at full stretch as Vics looked the more threatening but when the goal finally came it was for the home side. Poor defending allowing Ross McPherson and Mackenzie to combine down the right and set up Keir Knapp who drilled the ball past Dan McColgan.

The powerful running from Darvel was causing Vics all sorts of problems and they struggled to contain the wave of attacks that rained on them. A superb Sean Ewart tackle at the back post denied Eddie Ferns a tap in but in the 39th minute the home side went 2-0 up with the simplest of goals. From a corner kick Willie Robertson was left totally unmarked to head home.

It was the same in the second period with Darvel having the vast majority of possession but not creating the chances that their play merited by poor delivery and decision making. But still nothing would come off for Vics. McPherson totally missed the ball with the goal at his mercy while Darren Miller and McPherson both had shots from distance that flew just past.

The creative attacking football Whitletts played against Cumbernauld just wasn’t on show despite the best efforts upfront of Robert Patterson who was often left isolated and it came as no surprise when Darvel went 3-0 up in the 77th minute. Although there was controversy around the goal as substitute Scott Ferguson looked well offside but the assistants flag stayed down and he kept his cool to chip the ball over the advancing McColgan.

With ten minutes remaining Darvel were reduced to ten men. Keir Knapp having a rush of blood to the head as he was shown a straight red for violently kicking out at Martin Findlay.

With four minutes remaining Truesdale ensured he kept a clean sheet by saving his team mates blushes after a Findlay cross broke off Stephen McDevitt and appeared to be heading into his own goal and then to rub salt into Vics gaping wounds, the home side completed the scoring in the 90th minute. Callum Walsh being caught and robbed in possession by Miller who ran through to fire past McColgan.

A match that Vics will want to consign to the backburner as they prepare for their League Cup quarter final trip to Auchinleck this weekend.
