Whitletts Vics : Match Report

Wednesday, 28 August 2019

AUCHINLECK TALBOT 6 - WHITLETTS VICTORIA 0

Vics crashed out of the League Cup[ at the quarter final stage after being hit for six by in form Auchinleck Talbot at Beechwood Park.

Manager Peter Leonard rotated his squad for this game with an eye on the league which is the priority, giving players the opportunity to get some game time, as did Talbot but the current cup holders proved to be too strong on the day as they brought their goal tally up to TWENTY in their last three matches.

Whitletts started well with David Cunningham going close with an early header but it was Talbot who opened the scoring in the 14th minute. Vics keeper Martyn Barclay flapped at a corner kick and the ball fell for Hamish McKinlay who volleyed home.

Midway through the half Talbot went two up. As Vics cleared a corner kick, the ball was returned to the danger zone and with two Talbot players looking suspiciously offside, Dillon Young fired past Barclay. Talbot were now in the ascendancy and Jamie Glasgow went close with an angled shot from the edge of the box while McKinlay shot straight at Barclay with only the keeper to beat. But in the 35th minute, another howler from Barclay handed Talbot a three goal advantage. This time the Vics keeper dropped a cross ball into the six yard box allowing Mark Shankland the simplest of opportunities to roll the ball into the net.

There was to be no let up in the second period and in the 53rd minute Talbot went 4-0 ahead. Graham Wilson’s deflected free kick finding the corner of the net. Peter Leonard introduced Sean Ewart and Craig Reid to the play and Whitletts had their best spell of the game. On the hour mark Reid fed in Thomas Donovan whose first time effort flashed just wide of the angle. The a superb Vics move down the left ended with Donovan bringing a fine save from Andy Leishman at full stretch. Jordan Boyd that had a shot parried by the Talbot number one but in the 76th minute the home went five up. Gordon Pope rising unchallenged to Beat Barclay with a looping header into the far corner.

And Vics misery was complete five minutes from time when a ball across the face of goal picked out Keir Samson and whose effort from eight yards out was partially blocked by Barclay but the ball trickled over the goal line. A bad day at the office for Vics and one they have to quickly put behind them to focus on the bread and butter of the league and next weeks trip to Arthurlie.
