Whitletts Vics : Match Report

Monday, 04 March 2019

GLASGOW PERTHSHIRE 1 - WHITLETTS VICTORIA 4

With a weekend free of a competitive fixture, manager Peter Leonard took the opportunity to give his players a run out in this friendly at Keppoch Park with Vics running out comfortable winners against their League One hosts.

Persistent rain make the pitch slippery as both teams found it difficult to adapt early on. Although Whitletts had most of the early play the first chance fell to Perthshire but Marty Fraser did well to block Kwanu Nyama’s effort.

A clearance over his own bar by Logan McIntyre from a Thomas Donovan cross denied Vics with Jordan Baird set to score and then Donovan went close with a back post header after a Sean Ewart cross had evaded keeper Chris Calder as the visitors had the better of the play but they had keeper Fraser to thank on the half hour as he saved at full stretch to keep out a powerful Mark Thomson header.

Whitletts though looked the more threatening side and in the 37th minute they made the breakthough. Baird some 30 yards from goal turned two defenders and ran clean through to slip the ball past the advancing Calder.

Isaac Kerr came close to making it two when he kneed the ball against the crossbar from a Louis Kerr flick on but on the half time whistle it was Perthshire who came close to going in level at the break but again Fraser did well to deny Dylan Conner as the striker raced in on goal.

The home side started the second half strongly and again Fraser did well to turn a Thomson free kick round the post.

But in the 39th minute Whitletts doubled their advantage. From a Raymond Buchanan through ball Adam Forsyth raced clear and fired past the keeper.

Craig Smith almost responded immediately but fired wide and twice Fraser again had to be on hand to thwart the home as they pressed to get back into the game. But Vics also had their opportunities with Donovan missing a couple of great opportunities to get his name on the scoresheet whilst a poor touch from Forsyth allowed the ball to run away from him as he bore in on goal.

Midway through the second half any doubt about the outcome was dispelled as confusion at the back from a Perthshire throw in allowed Forsyth to latch onto the loose ball and waltz round the keeper before firing into the empty net but within sixty seconds poor defending at the other end allowed Smith to beat Fraser at his near post to make it 3-1.

Perthshire pushed for the second goal and Fraser again denied the home side saving from Nyama but still Vics were creating the better chances and should have added to their tally. In the 78th minute they scored a fourth. Louis Kerr to a pass on his chest and his shot took a deflection to beat Calder.

In the end a good run out for both sides in difficult condition but will keep the match fitness levels up as Vics prepare for the visit of high flying Rossvale to Dam Park on Saturday.
