Whitletts Vics : Match Report

Friday, 02 August 2019

Ten man Vics took a second half battering from Maybole but somehow held on to claim all three points to secure their qualification from their League Cup group and set up a last 16 clash with Troon.

Whitletts had to play 66 minutes with ten men after Isaac Kerr saw a straight red card for hauling back a Maybole striker as he bore in on goal, yet at half time look comfortable with a two goal advantage. But with both sides playing their third game in five gruelling days, and with a man down, Vics lost their cohesion as Maybole took control but they let themselves down badly with some very poor finishing, including a missed penalty with just two minutes to go!

Maybole keeper Darren Johnston was called into action after on five minutes to tip over a clever Robert Patterson effort who had his back to goal.

The home side's first venture upfield came in the 11th minute with Jai Holland striking the angle with a 20 yard drive. The first of three times the ‘Bole striker would be denied by the woodwork!

But with 20 minutes gone it was Whitletts who took the lead. From Craig Reid’s corner, Isaac Kerr rose unchallenged to head home.

Just 4 minutes later came that red card and Maybole almost took full advantage from the resulting free kick with Holland crashed off the crossbar.

The Ayr side were still largely controlling the proceedings despite being a man down and in the 32nd minute they went two up. A superb Sean Ewart cross from deep into the box picked out Reid who flicked the ball past Johnston at full stretch with the outside of his boot.

Two up at the interval and Whitletts were comfortable and it remained that way at the start of the second period. Indeed in the 58th minute Reid had a great chance to kill the game when he raced onto a Patterson pass but with just Johnston to beat the midfielder drilled the ball over the bar.

On the hour mark Nicholas Warren had a netbound shot blocked and scrambled to safety and from that point pon the home side took a grip on the game and put the Vics goal under severe pressure. Marc Cameron set up Jordan Barr inside the box but he fired wide.

Barr again fired wide from a quickly taken free kick but a goal was coming and it finally arrived in the 74th minute. Barr won possession out on the right and picked out Holland in the centre of the penalty area who gave Barclay no chance from 10 yards with a bullet of a header.

Whitletts were on the ropes and moments later Warren fired inches from the edge of the area. Maybole continued to press, looking for the equaliser that would have led to a penalty shoot out and they got their chance with just two minutes remaining when referee Josh Hay pointed to the spot after Barr went down under a Martin Findlay challenge on the byeline. Holland stepped forward to take the penalty and despite sending Barclay the wrong way, saw his effort again crash off the face of the crossbar.

Still Maybole had time to created a couple of great chances with Barclay denying Warren at his near post and then in the dying seconds from a free kick into the box Alan Paterson blazed the ball over the bar.

A strong and spirited performance from Maybole who in that second half thoroughly deserved to take something from the game but it is Whitletts who kept up their 100% record in the group to set up a trip to Portland Park on 12th August .
